Outokumpu VDM strip, sheet, plate, wire and bar have established themselves in many automotive applications. They can be found in the engine, in the exhaust system, in electronic components, auxiliary heating systems, and airbags. High-performance materials from Outokumpu VDM stand out for their special physical and mechanical properties and excellent resistance to high-temperature corrosion. The trend to downsizing automobile engines is leading to higher exhaust temperatures. As a result, demands on the material are increasing. Outokumpu VDM has just the right alloys in its portfolio for these challenges. The newly developed Cronifer 40 B has closed the gap between special stainless steels and nickel alloys.
Nearly all spark plug producers use round and flat wires in NiCr2Mn or Nicrofer 7615 - alloy 600 from Outokumpu VDM for the electrodes. In the manufacture of glow plugs and lambda probes, strip in materials such as Nicrofer 6023 H - alloy 601 (material no. 2.4851) and Nicrofer 6025 HT - alloy 602 CA (material no. 2.4633) has proven successful.
Valves are made from bars in Nicrofer 7520 Ti - alloy 80 A (material no. 2.4952) and Nicrofer 7016 TiAl - alloy 751 (material no. 2.4694), while fuel injection systems exploit the controlled expansion behaviour of Pernifer 36 - alloy 36 (material no. 1.3912) for the housings of their piezo-ceramic actuators.
